- Innovating Within Constraints
That was the mindset I brought to this particular challenge; I couldn't change the curriculum or any resources, implementation expectations, and all of the other pieces that come with asking teachers to learn While the curriculum leaders focused on the content, I focused on the process. The point was to reduce some of the friction that comes with learning something new. and creation, provide another place to organize learning, access resources, and create opportunities
- What is School For?
I think we all agree that our public school system needs some changes. Unfortunately, this is not a new dilemma, but rather one that has been around for quite a while. Until we all agree what the purpose of school is, we can't move forward. It's time to start the conversation. For more information, watch Seth Godin's TEDx talk "Stop Stealing Dreams". It's worth the 15 minutes. So, what about you? What do you think? What is school for? What do you think it SHOULD be for?
- Comfortably Uncomfortable
I first learned the phrase "lean into discomfort" while reading Brene Brown's book, Atlas of the Heart In class, we are learning how to create professional development that leads adult learners out of the comfort zone in learning something new. However, I said “please don’t-he has to learn how to do this”. I use these two illustrations to point out the fact that learning, and watching someone else learn something
- ePortfolio: Getting Started
After reading one of many linked resources in my class "What if we gave students time to learn..." and then the "why" behind the development of the ePortfolio course, I'm excited to trying this learning Wouldn't it be cool to have a digital portfolio that travelled with and showed how students grow and learn I haven't quite given up on WordPress yet, I just need some more learning on how to embed things. - Why an ePortfolio?
I was preparing for our community garage sale and going through some boxes, and stumbled upon my previous portfolios. One from college and one from my early teaching days that I kept up with to take to interviews. It was full of my work, my philosophy, current lesson, photos, etc. Obviously, I have not kept up with this practice. I have dabbled in blogs, had some posts published in small publications, had a classroom communication hub website, active social medias-but have never tied those ideas together in my professional world. I had never really thought of using it as an investment in myself to connect to other practitioners and finding and sharing my voice in that way. I never thought of pulling together all the pieces, my notes, my reflections, videos, thoughts, readings, social media posts, blogs, etc. and making that shift from the “dumping ground” to carefully curated content. I haven’t really thought of taking the time to organize and share the work that I have done in that manner. I knew I wanted to share things with others, but hadn’t thought of “how”. The literature and thoughts conveyed is that not only is this a useful tool, but it also becomes part of who you are, what your work is, what your passion is, what your ideas are, and it becomes the central place to show “…the connective thread between who you were and who you want to become” . Take a peek at this video... As stated in the video, the point is just to start and make it your own as you go, one step at a time. The pieces will fall into place. The look will fall into place. Overtime, it will organically and authentically become part of professional practice, just like reading up on current research and trends, attend conferences, and connecting with others for conversations. I am enjoying reigniting this process.

- Who owns the ePortfolio?
Every learner needs a safe place to take the risks that learning requires. The ePortfolio has the potential to be that place and space for learning-where there is just enough structure Who owns the learning? Other than being the title of one of my favorite books by Alan November, STUDENTS need to "own" the learning in an environment that allows for all to take risks and be vulnerable in the beautiful chaos called "learning
